SYMPTOMS

When you create or open a document, the PDFWriter toolbar (with a single button) appears. If you close the PDFWriter toolbar, it re-appears when you create or open a document.

RESOLUTION

The PDFWriter toolbar is controlled by being installed as a Word add-in. To turn off the functionality of the PDFWriter toolbar, you can remove the add-in from the Word Startup folder.

To remove an add-in from loading in Word at Startup, do the following:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Templates and Add-ins.

  2. In the Global templates and add-ins list, click to select the add-in you want to remove.

  3. Click Remove. (See note below.)

NOTE: If the Remove button is unavailable, use the following steps to permanently remove the add-in.
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

  2. On the File Locations tab, click to select Startup in the File types list.

  3. Click Modify to view the complete path.

  4. Write this path down, and then click Cancel.

  5. Click Close.

  6. Quit all instances of Word, including WordMail.

  7. Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, go to the Office Startup folder. If the following default path differs from the path you wrote down in step 4, go to the path you wrote down:

  8. <drive>:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP
  9. Click to drag the add-in to another location, such as your desktop.
