WD2000: Gray Shading Does Not Appear Correctly in Earlier Versions of Word

ID: Q220535

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

Gray shading that is applied and saved in Word 2000 may appear and print lighter or darker when the document is opened in Word 97 or Word 7.x for Windows 95.

CAUSE

Word 2000 applies true gray shading and does not require dithering. Earlier versions require dithering.

WORKAROUND

As you apply the shading in Word 2000, also select the appropriate pattern style for the shade of gray selected. This affects the display of the gray shade, but the shading now prints and appears appropriately in all three versions of Word.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
