MORE INFORMATION

When Microsoft Word 2000 opens or saves a document, it uses text converters to change the file format of the document.

To convert documents to and from different formats, you must install the appropriate text converters included with the Microsoft Office 2000 Setup or the Microsoft Office Converter Pack.

NOTE: When you use Microsoft Word 2000, you can collaborate with others who use earlier versions of Word and different applications. However, earlier versions of Word and some other applications do not support all of the Word 2000 features.

Text Converters That Are Native to Microsoft Word

The following text file formats are native to Word 2000; that is, they are built in and do not require an additional file format converter to be installed:

Text Converters Installed During "Install Now" Setup

The following text converters are installed, by default, when you do an "Install Now" Setup.

Text Converters Installed on First Use

The following text converters are not installed during an "Install Now" Setup but are "advertised" as being available. NOTE: The advertising of a feature means that the feature name appears on a menu where you would normally find the feature. When you first click on an advertised feature, Word prompts you to install the feature.

To install these text converters, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Install on First Use

When you attempt to open a document whose converter is not installed, the following message appears:
Microsoft Word can't import the specified format. This feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install it now?
When you click Yes, Word installs the text converter and then opens the selected document.

Method 2: Run Setup

Use the following steps to install the "Install on First Use" (advertised) text converters:
  1. Quit Word and all the Microsoft Office applications.

  2. On the Start menu, point to Settings and click Control Panel.

  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

  4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click to select Microsoft Office 2000 (or Microsoft Word 2000) and click Add/Remove.

  5. In Maintenance Mode Setup, click Add or Remove Features.

  6. Click to expand Converters and Filters.

NOTE: To expand, click the plus sign to the left of an item.

  7. Do one of the following:

  8. Click Update Now to install the selected text converters.
