WD2000: Text in Metafile Graphic Loses Rotation Editing in Word

The information in this article applies to:


SYMPTOMS

When you insert a Windows metafile with rotated text into Word and then double-click to edit the picture, the rotated text is realigned back to normal orientation.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Use Microsoft Draw 98 as your picture editor within Word.

To set Microsoft Draw 98 as your picture editor:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  2. On the Edit tab, select Microsoft Draw 98 from the Picture editor list.


If Microsoft Draw 98 is not in the list of available picture editors, you can use the following steps to install Microsoft Draw 98:
  1. Insert CD2 of the Microsoft Office 2000 CD-ROM disc set into your CD-ROM drive.


  2. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.


  3. In the Open text box, type the following:

    <CD-ROM Drive>:\Setup.exe


  4. Enter the necessary information to proceed to the Ready to Install panel.


  5. Click Customize.


  6. Choose the location to install to, and then click Next. (To accept the default location, just click Next.)


  7. In the Office Tools folder, click the icon for Microsoft Draw, and then click Run from My Computer.


  8. You can select to install or not install all other components listed.


  9. When you have completed your selections, click Install Now.


  10. When installation is complete, repeat the steps described earlier in this article under "To set Microsoft Draw 98 as your picture editor".


Method 2: Rotate the text using the Text Box toolbar.

The text box rotation can be reset in Word by viewing the Text Box toolbar and then clicking Change Text Direction.
  1. While in the Microsoft Word Picture Editor, select the text to rotate.


  2. On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Text Box.


  3. Click the Change Text Direction button to rotate the text.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.


MORE INFORMATION

With Microsoft Draw 98, you can create 3-D text effects, diagrams, and so on. Draw 98 is an OLE server and can be used with any OLE-compliant program.
