WD2000: Underline Is Displayed When Viewing Page in Web Browser

SYMPTOMS

When you display your Word document or Web page in Web Page Preview (File menu), your document may display an underline character on blank lines.

CAUSE

When the underline style property (on the Format menu, click Font and then select the Font tab) is set on a blank paragraph, the property is set on the paragraph mark. When the Web page is displayed in a Web browser, the blank paragraph is interpreted as a hard space (blank character), and the space is underlined. However, when you view your Web page in Word, the blank paragraph does not show the underlined space. This is because Word does not underline normal spaces or blank paragraphs.

WORKAROUND

Remove the unwanted underline formatting using the following steps:

  1. Open your Word or Web page document.

  2. Select the paragraph where the underline formatting appears in your Web page.

NOTE: The underline format may not appear in your Word document; it may only appear when viewing your Web page in your Web browser.

  3. On the Format menu, click Font.

  4. On the Font tab, change the Underline style box to (none), and then click OK.

Now when you view your document in your Web browser, underline characters are not displayed on blank lines.
