WD2000: wdDialogConvertObject Caption Property Returns Incorrect Value

SYMPTOMS

When you insert an object into a document (on the Insert menu, click Object) and you have selected the Display as icon option, and

you change the Caption for the icon,

you use the Visual Basic for Applications dialog collection to return the changed caption of the icon,

the value returned is not the new value of the object's icon caption.

For example, the following Visual Basic for Applications sample returns the object type instead of the new or changed icon caption for the selected object:


Sub GetObjIconCaption()
    Dim dlg As Dialog
    Set dlg = Application.Dialogs(wdDialogConvertObject)
    dlg.Update
    MsgBox dlg.Caption
End Sub

To work around this problem, you can use the IconLabel property of the OleFormat object to return the correct caption.

The following Visual Basic for Applications sample procedure loops through each inline object in a document and returns each object's caption:


Sub GetObjIconCaption()
   Dim OLEobj As Object   
   For Each OLEobj In ActiveDocument.InlineShapes
      MsgBox OLEobj.OLEFormat.IconLabel
   Next
End Sub

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

To insert an object to display as an icon, you can use the following steps:

On the Insert menu, click Object.

In the Object type list box, scroll to select, for example, Microsoft Word Document.

Click to select the Display as icon check box.

Click OK.
