WD2000: Word 5.1 for the Macintosh Document May Cause Illegal Operation

SYMPTOMS

After you open a Word 5.1 for the Macintosh document, the following error message may apear:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, the following error message appears:
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in module WINWORD.EXE at 015f:<address>
This problem may occur in either of the following cases:

Case 1

When you move your mouse pointer over the area where a picture is contained.

Case 2

When in print preview, you double-click in a blank area surrounding a picture.


CAUSE

This problem is caused when your Word 5.1 for the Macintosh document contains a PICT picture. Internally, Word converts the PICT picture to WMF format, and the "Enable click and type" feature in Word may conflict with the PICT conversion.


WORKAROUND

Turn off the "Enable click and type" option using the following steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.


  2. On the Edit tab, click to clear the "Enable click and type" check box.


  3. Click OK.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
