WD2000: Wrong Font Displayed When Opening Text Files

ID: Q211278

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you open a text file, the font used may not be what you expect.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the normal default font is not available. Text in text files is assigned the Plain Text style, which by default uses Courier New. If that font is not available, Word tries to use a font that is similar to the missing font. Depending on the fonts available, the choice may not be what you want.

WORKAROUND

To specify a font to be used to display and print text files, modify the Plain Text style. To modify the Plain Text style, follow these steps:

  1. On the Format menu, click Style.

  2. Under List, select All styles.

  3. Scroll through the list of styles and click Plain Text.

  4. Click Modify.

  5. Click Format, and click Font.

  6. Select the font you want, and then click OK.

  7. Click to select the Add to template check box, click OK, and then click Apply.

The font selected will now be used when opening text files.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

A mono-spaced (fixed character width) font is normally used to display simple text files, so that text aligned using spaces will display and print properly.
