WD97: Can't Find Paragraph Mark with Special Code

ID: Q191893

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If you use the ^13 code to find and replace paragraph marks in a document, you will be unable to locate those paragraph marks if you later search for them using the ^p character.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you use wildcards during a find and replace operation. Because of the way the wildcards are implemented in Microsoft Word, you must use ^13 to find paragraph marks. However, the character that you should use to replace paragraph marks is ^p.

WORKAROUND

If you want to replace a paragraph mark, you must use ^p (not ^13). If you use ^13 to replace paragraph marks, you will be unable to locate them with the ^p character.
