SYMPTOMS

When using the search function in Microsoft Clip Gallery, which is included in Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Home Publishing, you may find clips (image, sound and/or motion) that do not appear to be related to the search criteria. For example, the word "bell" returns bells and bell peppers. "Dog" returns images of dogs and hotdogs, while "sun" returns images of the sun, sunflowers, sundial and even bears in the sun.

Also, the words "monkey bars" returns a series of images, including an African American couple posing on playground equipment. In addition to 18 other word associations, this image was unfortunately assigned the words "monkey bars," referring to the playground equipment visible in the image. Among the other words associated with the image are man, woman, people, person, and others.

Microsoft has moved to resolve these issues by making available a new software tool that removes the association, which does not accurately address the image and can be viewed as inappropriate or insulting.


CAUSE

The search engine in Microsoft Clip Gallery utilizes a catalog file consisting of keywords that are associated with each clip. These keywords facilitate locating clips within the collection.

This clip is part of a photo series of this same couple in the same park: PH01457J shows them posing on a slide and PH01486J and PH01487J shows them running and jumping in front of a swing set. You can see the entire set in PUB98BAL.CAG by doing a keyword search for "playground equipment" or "playground."

The keywords for this clip include couples, man, men, males, woman, women, females, monkey bars, playground equipment, playgrounds, parks, recreation, people, person, photos, photographs, pictures, images as well as the term "monkey bars" referring to the playground equipment visible in the background. Because the search technology uses associations based on parts of words, the photograph also appears in the results when you do a keyword search for "monkey" in Clip Gallery

WORKAROUND

You can add or remove keywords from a Clip. To do this, follow these steps:

Clip Gallery 4.0 in Publisher 98

  1. Start Clip Gallery 4.0, and click the Images tab.


  2. In the Clip Gallery window, click Find (located on the right side of the window).


  3. In the Match these keywords box, type "monkey bars" and click Find Now.


  4. Right-click the image and select Clip Properties.


  5. In the Keywords box (near the middle of the dialog box) locate and add or remove keyword. This can be done by pressing BACKSPACE or by selecting the text and pressing DELETE.


  6. To save the changes, press OK.


Clip Gallery 5.0

  1. Find the clip that you want to edit. In this case, you can type "monkey bars" into the Search for clips box near the top of the Clip Gallery window, and then press ENTER. Clip Gallery will display the clips that match your search. Make sure that you have selected the Pictures tab.


  2. Right-click the clip.


  3. Click Clip Properties... on the shortcut menu. A dialog box with information about the clip will appear.


  4. Click the Keywords tab at the top of the dialog box. A list of keywords on the clip will be shown.


  5. Press Remove Keyword.


  6. To save the changes, press OK.



STATUS

Microsoft has acknowledged this to be an unintended association within Microsoft Clip Gallery .

The keyword "monkey bars" has been removed from the PUB60COR.MMC that will be delivered with the released version of Publisher 2000 to avoid this association.
