WD97: Run-time error '5880' Saving as HTML from VBA

SYMPTOMS

When you run the following line of Visual Basic for Applications code

   ActiveDocument.SaveAs "My HTML Document.html", _
   FileFormat:=Application.FileConverters("HTML").SaveFormat

you receive the following error message:

   Run-time error '5880': No registered converter supports saving files in
   this format.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when accessing the "HTML" document format from the FileConverters collection using a string value instead of a numerical value for the index.

The following Visual Basic for Applications code works around this problem. This code also provides a test to see if the converter has been installed. If the HTML converter cannot be found, a message box asks the user to run Setup and install the HTML converter.

      Dim boolHTMLExist As Boolean
      Dim strMsg As String
      Dim strFileName As String
      Dim fcCnv As FileConverter
      strMsg = "The HTML converter is not installed. Please run setup"
      strMsg = strMsg + " to install this converter."
      strFileName = "<Replace with document name omitting the extension>"
      For Each fcCnv In Application.FileConverters
         If fcCnv.ClassName = "HTML" Then
            ActiveDocument.SaveAs strFileName, FileFormat:=fcCnv.SaveFormat
            boolHTMLExist = True
            Exit For
         End If
      Next fcCnv
      If Not boolHTMLExist Then MsgBox strMsg
   End Sub

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 97. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
