FIX: ComboBox Events Do Not Fire When Contained in a Frame

SYMPTOMS

The ComboBox Click and Change events do not fire when the control is contained in a Frame control.


RESOLUTION

  1. Ensure that the ComboBox is not contained inside the Frame, but on top of it.


  2. In the Form Load event, set the ZOrder of the ComboBox as follows:

    Combo1.ZOrder 0



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was corrected in Windows CE Toolkit for Visual Basic 6.0.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Start a new Windows CE Project in Visual Basic 5.0. Form1 is created by default.


  2. Add a Frame (Frame1) to Form1.


  3. Draw a ComboBox (Combo1) inside Frame1.


  4. Add the following code to Form1:
    
          Option Explicit
          Dim x
    
          Private Sub Form_Load()
            For x = 1 to 8
              Combo1.AddItem "Item" & x
            Next
          End Sub
    
          Private Sub Combo1_Click()
            MsgBox "Text: " & Combo1.Text
          End Sub
    
          Private Sub Combo1_Change()
            MsgBox "Text: " & Combo1.Text
          End Sub 


  5. Press the F5 key to run the project.


  6. Click on the drop-down arrow of the ComboBox and then click on any item. Note that neither the Click event nor the Change event fires.
