FIX: Creating/Deleting Web Projects Results in IIS Hanging

SYMPTOMS

The available virtual memory on a Web server running Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and the FrontPage 97 server extenders decreases over time as Web projects are created and deleted through Visual InterDev. When the server runs out of virtual memory, Microsoft IIS (Inetinfo.exe) may terminate or hang during the creation or deletion of a Web project.

CAUSE

If the Microsoft Internet Information Server process terminates abnormally (crashes), this could be due to a low virtual memory condition caused by a memory leak in the FrontPage 97 Server extensions. This memory leak was fixed with the FrontPage 98 Server extensions.

RESOLUTION

Virtual memory can be released by stopping all Microsoft IIS services (WWW, FTP, and GOPHER) and restarting them.

STATUS

This problem has been addressed with the FrontPage 98 Server Extensions (or newer). The FrontPage 98 Server Extensions can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/wpp/default.htm.
