"Non-System Disk" Error Message After Canceling Uninstall

SYMPTOMS

If you upgrade your computer from Microsoft Windows 3.1x to Windows 98 Second Edition, start the uninstall process to remove Windows 98 Second Edition, and then click Cancel when the uninstall process prompts to check the disk for errors, you may receive the following error message:

Non-System disk error


RESOLUTION

To work around this problem:

  1. Insert your Windows 98 Startup disk into the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer.


  2. At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after each line:
    a:
    sys c:


  3. When you see the "System transferred" message, remove the Windows 98 Startup disk, and then restart your computer.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
