"Out of Memory" Error on Computers with Compressed Drives

ID: Q132810

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you start a program on a computer that is using disk compression, you may receive one of the following error messages:

CAUSE

If Windows 95/98 is installed on a compressed drive, the Setup program may place the swap file on the host drive of the compressed drive. If the host drive does not have enough free space, the swap file may not be able to grow large enough to accommodate large programs.

RESOLUTION

If you are using a Microsoft compression program (DrvSpace or DblSpace), the swap file can be safely placed on the compressed drive (assuming there is enough free space on the compressed drive). If you are using a non- Microsoft compression program, you must enlarge the host drive or move the swap file to another uncompressed drive.
