ACPI-Enabled Laptop Prompts Twice for a Hardware Profile

SYMPTOMS

When you start a laptop computer which uses Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) power management, you may be prompted for a hardware profile twice. If you create more than one hardware profile, and then restart your computer, you may receive the following message:

Windows cannot determine what configuration your computer is in. Select one of the following:

profile 1 name
profile 2 name
None of the above

Enter your choice:
After you make a selection, you may receive the following message:
Dock Change

Windows is unable to determine your hardware profile. Is "docked" the current profile?

Press Y for Yes or N for No


CAUSE

This issue occurs if you have multiple hardware profiles which cannot be automatically distinguished from each other. For example, if you have two "Docked" profiles which pertain to the same type of docking stations, but which have different devices enabled or disabled, you may experience this symptom.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you should read each prompt carefully, and select the same hardware profile during the second prompt as you selected at the first prompt.


STATUS

This behavior is by design.
