AntiVirus Warning After Installing Windows 98 Year 2000 Update

SUMMARY

The Windows 98 Year 2000 Update available on the Microsoft Windows Update Web site contains an updated Io.sys file. If you install the Windows 98 Year 2000 Update and you have the Cheyenne AntiVirus software installed, you receive the following prompt when you restart your computer: 


   BIOS System File Not Found
   What do you want to do with C:\IO.SYS?
   (A) Accept  I know why the settings changed and wish to save them.
   (I) Ignore  Keep old settings and remind me next time.
   (Q) Quit    I wish to Quit and verify why these settings changed.


If you choose the Accept (A) option, the AntiVirus files are updated to refer to the new Io.sys file and the Io.sys file is updated to the new version. You cannot then use AntiVirus to revert to the previous version of the Io.sys file.

If you do not choose the Accept (A) option, you receive this prompt every time you start your computer.

Windows 98 Startup Disk

Microsoft recommends updating the Windows 98 Startup disk after installing the Windows 98 Year 2000 Update. To update your Windows 98 Startup disk after installing the update, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.


  2. Insert your Windows 98 Startup disk in drive A.


  3. At the command prompt, type "sys a:" (without quotation marks), and then press ENTER. You should see a message that says "System transferred."

The updated Io.sys file is automatically transferred during the creation of the Windows 98 Startup disk using this method.

However, if you create a new Windows 98 Startup disk from within Windows 98, you should transfer the system files after the disk is created. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  3. Click the Startup Disk tab.


  4. Click Create Disk.


  5. Click OK.


  6. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.


  7. At the command prompt, type "sys a:" (without quotation marks), and then press ENTER. You should see a message that says "System transferred."
