Cannot Mount Compressed Drive Located on a CD-ROM

SYMPTOMS

You experience one or more of the following symptoms when you attempt to mount a compressed drive located on a CD-ROM:

• If the Automatically Mount New Compressed Drives option is enabled in DriveSpace and you insert a CD-ROM that contains a compressed volume file (CVF) into the CD-ROM drive, the CVF is not mounted automatically.



• If you attempt to use DriveSpace to mount a compressed drive located on a CD-ROM manually, the CD-ROM drive is not listed.



• If you attempt to mount a compressed drive located on a CD-ROM manually from a command prompt in Windows 95, the following error message is displayed

  The volume file <drive>:DRVSPACE.<nnn> cannot be found.

  where <drive> is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive, and <nnn> is a number in the range 000-254 (this is the sequence number of the CVF).

CAUSE

The DriveSpace tool does not support the CD-ROM File System (CDFS). The File Allocation Table (FAT) and Virtual File Allocation Table (VFAT) file systems are the only file systems supported by DriveSpace.

RESOLUTION

To mount the compressed drive located on the CD-ROM, copy the CVF to the hard disk and then use DriveSpace to mount the compressed drive from the hard disk.
