Cannot Register Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use the Registration wizard to register Windows 98, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot connect because the modem settings are not correct.


CAUSE

This error message can occur if there is a number in the "For long distance calls, dial" or the "For local calls, dial" box in the Dialing properties for the modem.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click the Modems icon.


  3. Click Dialing Properties.


  4. Under the When dialing from here section, remove the number listed in either the For local calls, dial or the For long distance calls, dial box.


  5. Click OK.


  6. Start the Registration wizard again.


After you finish the registration process, follow the steps above to replace the number(s) that you removed.


MORE INFORMATION

When the Registration wizard tries to call using the modem, it attempts to dial any number in the Dialing properties boxes. For example, if you have the number "1" in one of the boxes, instead of the Registration wizard dialing the number as 1-800-999-5698, it attempts to dial the number as 11-800-999-5698.
