SYMPTOMS

When you install an Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) network adapter in the docking station of a portable computer using Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) features, the network adapter may appear in both the docked and undocked hardware profiles. If you remove the ISA network adapter from the undocked hardware profile, the computer may stop responding (hang). When this occurs, pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE results in the error message "MSGSRV32 not responding." After you receive this error message, your computer may become unstable.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following steps:

  1. Shut down and undock the computer, and then start the computer.

  2. While your computer starts, press and hold down the CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears.

  3. Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu, and then press ENTER.

  4. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  5. Double-click System, and then click the Device Manager tab.

  6. Double-click the Network Adapters branch to expand it.

  7. Click the ISA network adapter, and then click Remove.

  8. Restart your computer normally.
