ID: Q188968

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If your AST Advantage 828 computer contains a CD-ROM changer, it may not work properly after you upgrade to Windows 98. A single CD-ROM drive may be displayed in Device Manager, and the CD-ROM changer may be displayed as Unknown Hardware under the Other Devices branch.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if SmartCD Manager is installed. The Scdmgrt3.vxd file located in the Windows\System\Iosubsys folder prevents Windows 98 from detecting the CD-ROM changer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, move the Scdmgrt3.vxd file into a different folder. For information about how to do so, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type moving, and then double- click the "Moving Files, Folders" topic.

STATUS

The third-party product discussed in this article is manufactured by a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior is known to occur on AST Advantage 828 computers with SmartCD Manager and a TORISAN (Sanyo) CDR-C36 6X three-disc CD-ROM changer.
