Code 8 Displayed for Plug and Play BIOS Device After Upgrading

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade Microsoft Windows 95 to Windows 98, an exclamation point in a yellow circle may be displayed next to the Plug and Play BIOS device in Device Manager. If you view the properties for the Plug and Play BIOS device, the following status may be displayed:


   This device is not working properly because the file (Bios.vxd) that
   loads the drivers for this device is bad (Code 8). To fix this problem,
   click Update Driver to update the driver for this device. 


If you click Update Driver and attempt to search for a better driver, you may receive the following message:


   The best driver is already installed. 


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Windows 95 version of the Bios.vxd file is in the Windows folder.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.


  2. In the Named box, type "bios.vxd" (without quotation marks), and then click Find Now.


  3. In the Look In box, click the drive on which the Windows folder is located.


  4. In the list of found files, right-click the Bios.vxd file located in the Windows folder, click Delete, and then click Yes.


  5. Quit the Find tool.


  6. Restart your computer.
