Computer Hangs When You Disconnect Dial-Up Networking Connection

SYMPTOMS

When you are using a 700 series Fujitsu Lifebook computer with an integrated 56KflexDSVD LTModem controllerless Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) modem and you disconnect a dial-up networking connection, your computer may stop responding (hang).


CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the modem driver provided by Fujitsu does not work correctly with Windows 98 power management.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact Fujitsu to obtain an updated modem driver.



To work around this issue, use the following method:

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

Disable power management for your computer's COM port. To do so, use Registry Editor to modify the following registry key:


Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VCOMM

Change the value of the EnablePowerManagement key from "01 00 00 00" to "00 00 00 00".

When you change this value in the registry, you may experience the following behavior:
