Computer Hibernates When Standby Is Pressed

ID: Q190715

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that conforms to the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) specification, if you select the Standby action for the power button on the Advanced tab of the Power Management tool in Control Panel, and you press the power button, the computer may hibernate instead of standing by.

Likewise, if you select Standby as the action taken when the lid of the portable computer is closed, the computer may hibernate instead of standing by when the lid is closed.

In addition, if you click Start, click Shut Down, and then click Stand By, the computer may hibernate instead of standing by.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur on ACPI-compliant computers if the Enable Hibernation Support option is enabled on the Hibernate tab in the Power Management tool in Control Panel. Under this configuration, Windows 98 causes the computer to hibernate instead of standing by when you press the power button.

RESOLUTION

This issue is resolved by the following updated files for Windows 98, as well as later versions of these file(s):

   Configmg.vxd version 4.10.2101 dated 6/29/98 9:01pm 115,665 bytes
   Vpowerd.vxd version 4.10.2101 dated 6/29/98 9:01pm 37,523 bytes
   Ntkern.vxd version 4.10.2102 dated 7/21/98 9:02pm 194,494 bytes
The problem is resolved for the Spanish version of Windows 98 by the following updated files, as well as later versions of these file(s):

   Configmg.vxd version 4.10.2101 dated 10/12/98 8:31am 115,669 bytes
   Vpowerd.vxd version 4.10.2101 dated 10/12/98 8:31am 37,527 bytes
   Ntkern.vxd version 4.10.2102 dated 10/12/98 8:31am 194,494 bytes

With this update installed, the computer will stand by as expected when Standby is selected as the action to be performed when the power button is pressed or the lid is closed, and when you click Start, click Shut Down, and then click Stand By.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 98. An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for more information.

MORE INFORMATION

The Hibernate tab appears in Power Management properties only if the computer is configured to support hibernation. To determine whether your computer supports hibernation and how to enable that support, please consult your computer's documentation or manufacturer.
