Desktop Shortcut Key Cannot Be Reassigned if Shortcut Is Deleted

SYMPTOMS

When you try to assign a shortcut key combination used by another desktop shortcut on your Microsoft Windows 98-based computer or Microsoft Windows 95-based computer with Internet Explorer 4.0 or 4.01 installed, you may be unable to do so. This may occur even if the other desktop shortcut is deleted.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method:


Clear the Shortcut Key Combination

To clear the shortcut key combination that you want to reuse, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the desktop shortcut that is assigned the key combination you want be reuse, and then click Properties. If necessary, click the Shortcut tab.


  2. Click the Shortcut Key box, and then press DELETE. Note that the value of the Shortcut Key is changed to None.


  3. Click OK. You can now reassign the key combination to another desktop shortcut.




Restart Your Computer

If you have already deleted the desktop shortcut that was assigned the key combination you want to reuse, restart your computer. You can now reassign the key combination to another desktop shortcut.
