Device Manager Displays "Reserved Devices" for Aztech Sound Card

ID: Q186891

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If your computer contains an Aztech sound card, Device Manager may display some devices as reserved devices under the Sound, Video And Game Controllers branch.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because some Aztech sound cards include a set of additional devices that are either not implemented or have no functional value to the user. These types of devices are displayed as reserved devices in Device Manager.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Windows 95, these types of devices are displayed as unknown devices under the Unknown Devices branch in Device Manager. In Windows 98, unknown devices are automatically selected to indicate that the device is not recognized, and that you may need to contact the vendor for the correct driver. Since the additional devices included with the Aztech sound card do not require a driver, Microsoft and Aztech determined that it is less confusing to display them as reserved devices instead of unknown devices.
