SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows 98, your display may appear distorted or scrambled.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your monitor is not detected correctly during Windows 98 Setup.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, verify that the correct monitor is installed and then optimize the refresh rate of your video adapter. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Display.

  3. On the Settings tab, click Advanced.

  4. Click the Monitor tab. If the wrong monitor is installed click Change.

  5. Click Next, click "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want," and then click Next.

  6. Click Show All Hardware, and then follow the instructions on the screen to finish installing your monitor.

  7. Click the Adapter tab, and then click Optimal in the Refresh Rate box.

  8. Click OK, and then click OK when you receive the following message:
Windows will now adjust the refresh rate of your display. The screen may flicker for a few moments while the settings are being changed. If the display becomes garbled or unusable, simply wait and Windows will restore your original settings.

  9. Click Yes when you are prompted to keep this setting, and then click OK.
