SYMPTOMS

When you try to rename a file, you may receive the following error message:

A file name cannot contain any of the following characters: \/:8?:<>


CAUSE

This issue can occur if the new file name is longer than 230 characters.


RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use a file name that is shorter than 230 characters.


MORE INFORMATION

Note that this error message can also occur when you rename a folder on the Start menu.
