SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to download a compressed UNIX file with a .tar or .gz file extension, you may receive the following Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) Console error message instead of the File Download dialog box:

CAUSE

This issue can occur when the Microsoft VRML 2.0 Viewer is installed on your computer. The VRML 2.0 Viewer creates a file association for .tar and .gz files. When you select a file with an extension of .tar or .gz, the VRML 2.0 Viewer attempts to open and run the file. Compressed Unix files cannot be opened by the VRML 2.0 Viewer. When the VRML 2.0 Viewer attempts to open a compressed Unix file, the console error message occurs.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, uninstall the VRML 2.0 viewer. To do so, use the appropriate method:

Windows 98

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  3. Click the Windows Setup tab.


  4. Click Internet Tools, and then click Details.


  5. Click the Microsoft VRML 2.0 Viewer check box to clear it.


  6. Click OK.


  7. Click OK.


Internet Explorer 4.0 and 4.01 for Windows 95

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click MS VRML2 Control, and then click Add/Remove.


  4. Click OK, and then click OK again.


  5. Click OK to close Control Panel.


You may be able to work around this issue by using the FTP tool (Ftp.exe) included with Windows 98 to download .tar and .gz files.
