SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Windows 98, you may receive the following error message:

SU0358

Setup detected one or more MS-DOS-based programs running on your computer. Close your MS-DOS programs, and then click OK to continue. Or, click Cancel to quit Setup.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when you upgrade Microsoft Windows 3.1 to Windows 98 on an AST computer that is using AST's Desktop.exe program instead of Program Manager as the interface (or "shell").

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Click Cancel to quit Setup.

  2. Using a text editor (such as Notepad), open the System.ini file. By default, the System.ini file is located in the Windows folder.

  3. Locate the "shell=<path>\desktop.exe" line in the [Boot] section of the System.ini file, and then disable it by placing a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line.

  4. Add the following line beneath the line you disabled in step 3:

          shell=progman.exe

  5. Save and then close the System.ini file.

  6. Restart Windows 3.1, and then run Setup again.

MORE INFORMATION

If you attempt to close the Desktop.exe program using Task Manager by pressing CTRL+ESC, clicking Desktop.exe, and then clicking End Task, Windows 3.1 attempts to quit. This behavior occurs because you are using the Desktop.exe program as the Windows 3.1 interface (or "shell").
