SYMPTOMS

If you connect to the Internet using an Internet service provider (ISP) other than MSN, The Microsoft Network, you may receive either of the following error messages when you start Internet Explorer:

Update MSN for Windows 98. We noticed that you are running MSN. Windows 98 provides you with a new improved version of MSN that will let you connect faster, with more capabilities.
-or-
We have detected that MSN has previously been installed on this computer. If you currently subscribe to MSN (or wish to), you must click "MSN Setup" below before you can connect to MSN via Internet Explorer. To continue using Internet Explorer for purposes other than accessing MSN, click "Internet Explorer" below.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if a shortcut to MSN Quick View is located in the StartUp folder.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, remove the shortcut to MSN Quick View from the StartUp folder. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar & Start Menu.


  2. On the Start Menu Programs tab, click Remove.


  3. Double-click the StartUp folder.


  4. Click MSN Quick View, and then click Remove.


  5. Click Close, click OK, and then restart your computer.
