Err Msg: Win.com Not Found, Unable to Load Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you install IBM DB2 Universal Database-Personal Edition, you may not be able to restart your computer and you receive the following error message:

Win.com not found, unable to load Windows.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if the path statement in the Autoexec.bat file is too long or the %systemroot% variable is truncated.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Restart your computer. Press and hold down the CTRL key until you see the Windows 98 Startup menu.


  2. Select Command Prompt Only, and then press ENTER.


  3. Using an MS-DOS-based text editor, edit the Autoexec.bat file.


  4. Type rem at the beginning of the path statement.


  5. Save and close the file, and then restart your computer.
