SYMPTOMS

When you start your computer with Symantec WinFax Pro version 8.0 installed, you may receive the following error message:

WinFax is unable to display the animated fax machine in the Status dialog. This may be due to insufficient memory. Close all open programs and then restart WinFax or the Controller.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if the correct Media Control Interface (MCI) devices needed by WinFax are not installed.


RESOLUTION

To resolve the issue, install the appropriate MCI devices that WinFax requires. To do so, use the following steps:

  1. Click Start, point to settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add New Hardware.


  2. Click Next, click No, and then click Next.


  3. In the Hardware Types box, click Sound, Video and Game Controllers, and then click next.


  4. In the Manufacturers list, click Microsoft MCI, click CD Audio Device in the Models list, and then click next.


  5. Click Finish, and click No when you are prompted to restart your computer.


  6. Repeat steps 2-5 to install the following additional MCI devices:
    MIDI Sequencer Device
    Motion Video Device
    Wave Audio Device


  7. Restart your computer.
