SYMPTOMS

After you log on to your network and then attempt to establish a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection that requires you to log on to a domain, you may not receive validation on the VPN connection. Also, any scripts designed to run at logon may not run, and when you attempt to gain access to resources on the domain, you may receive the following error message:

Access Denied
Also, you may not receive notification or an error message stating that you have not been validated by the domain server.

CAUSE

If the connection to the Internet requires a domain logon, the VPN connection cannot log on to a second domain.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use either of the following methods:

Method 1

Configure your computer not to log on to the domain when you start Windows:
  1. Set your primary network logon to Windows Logon.

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.

    2. In the Primary Network Logon box, click Windows Logon, and then click OK.

  2. Remove the TCP/IP binding to your Ethernet adapter.

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.

    2. Double-click the TCP/IP protocol bound to your Ethernet adapter, click the Bindings tab, click to clear the Client for Microsoft Networks (or Client for NetWare Networks) check box, click to clear the File and Printer Sharing check box (if present), click OK, and then click OK.

  3. Double-click Client for Microsoft Networks, and then verify that the Log on to Windows NT domain check box is selected, and that the Logon Validation information includes the Windows NT domain name.

  4. Set your PPTP connection to use the Log On to Network setting.

Method 2

Do not log on to your domain when you start Windows. Start your VPN connection, which prompts you to log on to your Windows NT network, and then log in normally to be validated. To log on to another domain, you must restart your computer.
