Error Message When You Attempt to Open Control Panel After Setup

SYMPTOMS

You may experience either of the following symptoms:


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if IBM ViaVoice Gold version 4.3.0.1 is installed on your computer when you upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows 98, or if you uninstall ViaVoice Gold 4.3.0.1 in Windows 95.


RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).


To resolve this behavior, contact IBM Technical Support to inquire about an updated version of ViaVoice Gold.

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.


  2. In the Named box, type setnote.cpl, and then click Find Now.


  3. If the file is displayed as "setnote" in the list of found files, follow these steps before proceeding to step 4:

    1. Double-click My Computer, and then click Folder Options on the View menu.


    2. Click the View tab.


    3. Under Files And Folders, click the Hide file extensions for known file types check box to clear it, and then click OK.


    If the file is displayed as "setnote.cpl" in the list of found files, proceed to step 4.


  4. In the list of found files, right-click the Setnote.cpl file, and then click Rename.


  5. Type a different name for the Setnote.cpl file (such as Setnote.xxx), and then press ENTER.


  6. Quit the Find tool.


  7. Using Registry Editor, delete the Setnote.cpl value in the following registry key:


    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFindSpecMRU


  8. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.
