SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use the Registration wizard to register Windows online, you may receive the following error message:

The Registration wizard cannot run because the information it requires from the system is either unavailable or incorrect.


CAUSE

This error message can occur if you attempt to start the Registration wizard by running the Regwiz.exe file from a command line, or by double- clicking the Regwiz.exe file located in the Windows\System folder.


RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, follow the steps in the appropriate section below:

Windows 95

Start the Registration wizard from the Welcome dialog box. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.


  2. In the Open box, type welcome, and then click OK.


  3. In the Welcome dialog box, click Online Registration, and then follow the instructions on the screen.


Windows 98

Start the Registration wizard from the Welcome To Windows 98 dialog box. To do so, use either of the following methods:

Method 1:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Welcome To Windows.


  2. In the Welcome To Windows 98 dialog box, click Register Now, and then follow the instructions on the screen.


Method 2:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.


  2. In the Open box, type "welcome" (without quotation marks), and then click OK.


  3. In the Welcome To Windows 98 dialog box, click Register Now, and then follow the instructions on the screen.



MORE INFORMATION

The Regwiz.exe file is used by all Microsoft programs that can be registered online. You cannot start the Registration wizard by double- clicking the Regwiz.exe file located in the Windows\System folder. To start the Registration wizard using a command line, you must provide the location where the program's registration information is stored in the registry. For example, to start the Registration wizard to register Windows online, use the following command line:

regwiz /i "software\microsoft\windows\currentversion"
