Fewer Display Settings May Be Available with Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your computer to Windows 98, there may be fewer display settings available for your display adapter in Display properties.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if a generic display driver is selected for your display adapter.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of your display adapter to obtain a Windows 98-compatible driver for your display adapter.


MORE INFORMATION

Windows 98 includes generic video drivers for common display adapter chip sets. A generic driver is used when a driver for a specific display adapter is not available. The generic video drivers support the most common features and display resolutions available for each chip set. Therefore, some display settings may not be available when you use a generic video driver.

For example, you may not be able to select the following display settings when you are using a generic display adapter driver with display adapters based on the S3 801/805 chip set:
