File Names with Extended Characters Not Copied During Setup

ID: Q192272

SYMPTOMS

Installing software that uses certain non-English extended characters in the file or folder names may result in the files not being copied or the folders not being created. This problem may occur when you install software that uses the Windows 98 .inf file driven Setup functions provided by Setupx.dll.

CAUSE

There are two problems in Setupx.dll which, in combination, may cause files with whose names contain extended characters to be copied to temporary file names during Setup, and then deleted before they can be renamed to their final names (which would otherwise occur during the next Windows startup).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 98.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem occurs only for a certain subset of extended characters. These characters are those for which the character codes for the MS-DOS (OEM) code page and the Windows (ANSI) code page do not match.

This problem is known to occur with the following language versions of Windows 98:

   English
   Dutch
   French
   German
   Italian
   Spanish
   Swedish

This problem does not occur with the following language versions of Windows 98:

   Brazilian Portuguese
   Danish
   Norwegian

The Setupx.dll file for these language versions was modified to correct this problem before the release of Windows 98 in these languages.
