How to Create Custom Calling Card Rules in Windows 98

This article describes how to create a custom calling card rule in Windows 98. Calling card rules can be used for dialing long distance or international locations with Dial-Up Networking, HyperTerminal, Microsoft Fax, Phone Dialer, or any other program that uses Windows 98 telephony.

To create a custom calling card rule:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. In Control Panel, double-click Telephony, and then click Calling Card.


  3. Click New, type the name of the calling card in the Create a new calling card named box, and then click OK.


  4. Click OK when you are prompted to enter dialing rules.


  5. Type the PIN number, if any, for your calling card in the Personal ID Number (PIN Number) box.


  6. In the To use this calling card for long distance calls box, type the access number that you need to dial before you dial a domestic long distance call. For example, you may need to dial 9 before you can place a call.


  7. In the To use this calling card for international calls box, type the international access number for the country you intend to call.


  8. Click Long Distance Calls, and then select the appropriate option in each step that is required for dialing domestic long distance calls.


  9. Starting with the "Step 1" fields, select the sequence of steps required to make a long distance call using this calling card. Each step consists of a pair of dial and "then wait for" options. The list of available options and a description of each are listed below:

    Available options for the Dial box include:

    
CallingCard phone number: The number entered in step 5.
Destination Number (without area code): The number you're connecting 
to, without the area code.
Destination Number (including area code): The number you're connecting 
to, including the area code.
Destination Country/Region: The country or region code for the number you're connecting to.
PIN: Your calling card PIN.
Specified Digits: Any digits you specify.
Done: End dialing.
Do Tone Dialing Hereafter: Switch to Tone dialing, if Pulse dialing had  been used previously.

    Available choices for the "then wait for" field include:

    
Nothing: Proceed immediately to the next step.
Tone: Wait for a dial tone or other special tone before proceeding to the next step.
Done: End dialing.
2 Seconds: Pause for 2 seconds before proceeding to the next step.
4 Seconds: Pause for 4 seconds before proceeding to the next step.
46 Seconds: Pause for 46 seconds (maximum available) before proceeding to  the next step.


  10. Click OK when finished.


  11. To enter the dialing sequence for international calls, follow steps 8-9.


  12. When finished, click OK to save the new calling-card rule.


  13. Click to select the For long distance calls, use this calling card check box, and then select your custom calling card name from the list to use your custom calling card rule.


  14. Click OK to save your settings and then close the Dialing Properties window.

For example, the calling card rules for the "AT&T via 1-800-321-0288" calling card are:
