Icon and Command Remain After Uninstalling Program

SYMPTOMS

After you uninstall a program that has added a command to the menu that appears when you click Start and then point to Find, the command and its related icon may remain on this menu.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if your program does not remove the appropriate information from the following registry key during the uninstallation process:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FindExtentions\Static


RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).
To resolve this issue, use Registry Editor to delete the appropriately named key from the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FindExtentions\Static
For example, if FindFolks is the command and icon on the menu you want to delete, use Registry Editor to find and remove the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FindExtentions\Static\FindFolks
