Incorrect Computer Name After Running Internet Connection Wizard

SYMPTOMS

After you run the Internet Connection Wizard, you may experience one or both of the following symptoms:

Microsoft Personal Web Server may display your computer name incorrectly on the Main Web page of the Personal Web Manager. The Web address of your home page may be displayed as the name you used to log on to the computer instead of your computer name.

When you run the Presentation Conference Wizard in Microsoft PowerPoint 95 or 97, the Connection Details Web page of the wizard may report your computer name as the name you used to log on to the computer instead of the computer name.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the Internet Connection Wizard included with the products listed earlier in this article adds a string value named "HostName" to the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControl/Services/VxD/MSTCP/

When this value is added, the Internet Connection Wizard may incorrectly set this value to the name that you used to log on to the computer instead of your computer name.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).
To resolve this issue, perform the following steps to determine your computer name, and then modify the registry to include this information:

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.

Click the Identification tab, and then note the computer name noted in the Computer name box.

Click Cancel.

Use Registry Editor to locate the HostName value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControl/Services/VxD/MSTCP/
Change the HostName value to the computer name you noted in step 2, and then quit Registry Editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
