ID: Q190608

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If your computer contains an Intel Celeron processor (CPU), Windows 98 may report it as an Intel Pentium II processor when you view computer information on the General tab in the System Properties dialog box.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Celeron processor is a derivative of the Pentium II processor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 98.

MORE INFORMATION

The only technical differences between Celeron and Pentium II processors is that Celeron processors have no onboard L2 cache and no plastic cartridge that covers the printed circuit board (PCB). As a result, when Windows 98 queries the processor for its ID, the ID returned is interpreted as a Pentium II processor.
