No SCSI CD-ROM Drive After Windows 98 Setup Restarts Computer

SYMPTOMS

When Windows 98 Setup restarts your computer for the first time, Setup may be unable to gain access to your Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) CD-ROM drive, and you may receive error messages stating that files cannot be found. The file names vary depending on your computer's hardware.

Once Setup is completed and you attempt to start Windows 98, your computer may stop responding (hang), and only a blinking cursor may be displayed on a black screen.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Hide120.com file is being loaded from the Autoexec.bat file.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key until you see the Windows 98 Startup menu, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only.


  2. At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER:

    edit autoexec.bat


  3. Disable the following line in the Autoexec.bat file:

    <drive>:\lsl120\hide120.com

    To disable the line, type rem at the beginning of the line.


  4. Press ALT+F, press S (to save), press ALT+F, and then press X (to exit).


  5. Restart your computer normally.


Some devices, such as your sound card or video adapter, may not work properly when you start Windows 98. To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click System, and then click the Device Manager tab.


  2. Click a device that is not working properly (this is usually indicated by an exclamation point in a yellow circle next to the device), click Remove, and then click OK to confirm device removal.


  3. Repeat step 2 for each device that is not working properly.


  4. Click Close, and then restart your computer. Windows 98 should detect the devices and install the appropriate drivers.

The Hide120.com file enables you to gain access to an LS120 drive in MS- DOS, Microsoft Windows 3.x, and the retail version of Microsoft Windows

  1. In Microsoft Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) and later


versions of Windows, you are not required to load the Hide120.com file to gain access to LS120 drives. Disabling the line that loads the Hide120.com file does not affect the performance of your computer.
