SoftRam Version 1.03 Is Incompatible with Windows

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows, you may see the following error message on a blue screen when you restart your computer:

Invalid VxD dynamic link call from IOS(03) +00000B5D to device "Pagefile", service 7. Your Windows configuration is invalid, run the windows Setup program again to correct this problem.

To continue to run Windows, press Y or ENTER. To quit the current program, press N. If you continue running Windows, your system may become unstable. Do you want to continue?


CAUSE

This problem can occur if SoftRam version 1.03 is installed on your computer. SoftRam 1.03 is incompatible with Windows.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use either of the following methods:

Disable SoftRam

To disable SoftRam, follow these steps:
  1. Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to open the System.ini file in the Windows folder.


  2. Disable the following lines in the [386Enh] section of the System.ini file. To disable these lines, place a semicolon (;) at the beginning of each line:
    
          Device=C:\Softram\softram1.386
          Device=C:\Softram\softram2.386
          SoftRam=1
          SoftRamOnTop=0
          SoftRamSize=12000 (value varies)
          SoftRamMaxPhys=100
          SoftRamMinoper=2500
          SoftRamSpeed=10
          SoftRamExtended=12288 (value varies)
          SoftRamLowmemExt=1
          SoftRamResourceExt=1
          PageOverCommit=10
       


  3. Save and then close the System.ini file.


  4. Use the right mouse button to click an empty area on the taskbar, and then click Properties on the menu that appears.


  5. On the Start Menu Programs tab, click Remove.


  6. Double-click the Startup folder, click the SoftRam icon in the Startup folder, and then click Remove.

    NOTE: Do not remove the SoftRam folder (which is listed above the Startup folder) by mistake. Make sure to remove the SoftRam icon in the Startup folder.


  7. Click Close, and then click OK.


  8. Restart your computer.


Remove SoftRam

To remove SoftRam, use the Uninstall program included with SoftRam, or use the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.


MORE INFORMATION

Note that this problem can also occur if you install SoftRam95 in Windows 3.x and then upgrade your computer to Windows. To work around this problem, follow the steps in the "Resolution" section of this article, finish installing Windows, and then reinstall SoftRam95.
