System Recovery May Not Restore Windows NT Dual Boot Menu

SYMPTOMS

After you restore files from a full Windows 98 system backup, the Windows NT Dual Boot menu may not be displayed.

CAUSE

A hard disk failure can cause a loss of the system partition information in the Master Boot Record (MBR) on the hard disk. When you use the SYS command as part of the Windows 98 System Recovery process, the SYS command replaces the Windows NT system files with Windows 98 system files. This can also occur with Restore.exe.

RESOLUTION

To restore the Windows NT Dual Boot menu, you can use the Windows NT Setup disks to repair the system files after restoring your backup files. Replacing the Windows 98 system files with the Windows NT Flex Boot Loader restores dual-boot functionality with Windows 98.
