SYMPTOMS

When you are using a Toshiba 4500 laptop computer, if you shut down Windows in Suspend mode or close the lid, Windows appears to shut down successfully. However, when you resume Windows, the computer reboots after a short time.

CAUSE

Toshiba 4500 laptop computers require an additional driver file to implement Advanced Power Management (APM) features. The APM features do not function correctly without the Wresume.386 file from Toshiba.

RESOLUTION

Obtain the Wresume.386 file from Toshiba, and then add it to the System.ini file. To add the Wresume.386 file to the System.ini file, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click WordPad.

  2. On the File menu, click Open.

  3. In the File Name box, type "c:\windows\system.ini" (without quotation marks) and then click Open.

  4. In the [386Enh] section of the file, add the following line

          device=<path>\wresume.386

    where <path> is the path to the Wresume.386 file. For example, if the Wresume.386 file is located in the Windows folder on drive C, add the following line:

          device=c:\windows\wresume.386

  5. On the File menu, click Save.

  6. On the File menu, click Exit.

  7. Shut down Windows and then restart your computer.

MORE INFORMATION

The Wresume.386 driver lets you suspend the system by shutting the laptop's lid and resume by opening the lid. Using the Suspend command on the Start menu does not work with the Wresume.386 driver.
