Unexpected Behavior When Using Fill With Color or Brush Tool

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use the Fill With Color tool or Brush tool in Microsoft Paint, you may experience unexpected behavior.

For example, if you attempt to fill only part of the canvas using the Fill With Color tool, the entire canvas may be filled. Alternately, if you attempt to fill the entire canvas using the Fill With Color tool, only part of the canvas may be filled. If you select the Brush tool, a trail of dots may appear when you move the cursor across the canvas.


CAUSE

This problem can occur if you set the image attributes to 1024x768 pixels, and you enable the Black And White option.


RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, set the image width to something other than 1024 pixels, set the image height to something other than 768 pixels, and enable the Colors option. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. On the Image menu, click Attributes.


  2. In the Width box, type a number other than 1024.


  3. In the Height box, type a number other than 768.


  4. Click Colors.


  5. Click OK.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 98.
