Uninstalling Windows 98 Changes Display Settings

SYMPTOMS

After you uninstall Windows 98 so you can use Windows 95 again, you may receive the following error message when you restart your computer:

There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is incorrect, or the current settings do not work with your hardware.
Also, your video adapter may be set to display 16 colors and may be disabled in Device Manager.


RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, reinstall the proper video driver and reset your color settings:

  1. For information about how to reinstall the proper video driver, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  2. To reset your color settings, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.


  3. Click the Settings tab, and then click the appropriate setting in the Color palette box.


  4. Click OK, and then click Yes if you are prompted to restart your computer.
