User Name Keeps Changing in Dial-Up Networking Connection

SYMPTOMS

When you double-click a Dial-Up Networking (DUN) connection on a computer that has User Profiles enabled, the User name dialog box may display the name of the last user who made a successful connection, even though you want a generic name to be displayed.

For example, you want everyone who uses a shared computer to make a connection to a host computer using the same connection credentials.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. The user name and password are cached in the password file when a user logs on to a computer running Windows 95 or Windows 98.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. Contact your systems administrator and request that he or she establish a generic user account on the host computer. After the generic user is created on the host computer, continue to the next step.

  2. Log on to the shared computer using the generic user name and password.

  3. Double-click My Computer, double-click Dial-Up Networking, and then double-click Make New Connection. Follow the instructions on your screen to complete the Make New Connection Wizard.

  4. Double-click the new connection you just created. The user name and password are cached after you connect successfully.
