Uuencoded Attachments Are Numbered Sequentially in MS Exchange

The information in this article applies to:


SYMPTOMS

When you send messages as attachments using the Internet Mail information service in Microsoft Exchange (Windows Messaging), the messages are numbered as Msg0001.txt, Msg0002.txt, Msg0003.txt, and so on.

When you compose a new message, the numbering sequence does not start over, but instead continues with the next number.


CAUSE

When you send messages using Microsoft Exchange and you include multiple uuencoded attachments in a message, the counter is not reset and attachment numbers are incremented in all subsequent messages.

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

MORE INFORMATION

The attachment count can be misleading when you receive a message with an attachment count not starting at one. This could lead you to believe you have not received all the attachments.
